hq to host congressional briefing in washington d.c.

the irem government affairs team will travel to d.c. for our annual congressional briefing later this month. the briefing, “the impact of federal policies on real estate,” will focus on federal policies that affect the real estate and property management industry. our presenters shira ali, cpc, cpm®, arm®, ram, and jae a. roe, cpm®, acom®, will provide an overview to congressional staffers on how the property management industry plays a pivotal role in shaping the economic landscape and fostering community development.

the briefing will also address federal legislation which could have a significant impact on the industry, including: the choice in affordable housing act (s.32/h.r.4606), the respect state housing laws act (s.3755/h.r.802), and the revitalizing downtowns and main streets act (h.r. 9002).

stay tuned to hear how the briefing went in next month’s government affairs digest.

irem endorses the economic opportunity for distressed communities act

recently, congressman chuck edwards (nc-11) reached out to irem requesting our endorsement for a bill he is introducing called the ‘economic opportunity for distressed communities act.’ the legislation would expand the opportunity zone tax credit to brownfield and superfund sites to promote development in environmentally distressed communities.

in an official statement from 2024 irem president libby ekre, cpm®, “irem applauds north carolina representatives chuck edwards and wiley nickel for introducing the economic opportunity for distressed communities act”. this legislation would incentivize the redevelopment and revitalization of environmentally challenged properties, specifically designating all superfund and brownfield areas as opportunity zones. redevelopment motivates economic growth and job creation in distressed communities nationwide.
