advocacy spotlight: calls to action
in this month’s advocacy spotlight, we are highlighting several states from across the country, including rhode island, connecticut, georgia, michigan, and california, who are conducting calls to action on a wide array of issues from just cause eviction to restrictions on tenant screenings. calls to action is an online grassroots advocacy platform. irem members can easily connect with their federal or state representatives to support or oppose a legislative proposal. with a few clicks, ready-made messages go directly to their representatives. click here to view our current calls to action. is your chapter interested in learning more about irem’s grassroots advocacy platform? contact the government affairs team to schedule a meeting to learn more about this easy-to-use advocacy program.
respect state housing laws act passes out of committee
on april 17th, the respect state laws housing act (h.r.802) passed out of the house financial services committee and will now head to the house floor. if passed, the bill would eliminate a provision in the cares act which requires a 30-day notice period before a property manager may begin eviction proceedings against a tenant in federally assisted or federally backed housing. as you may recall, irem members successfully advocated for this legislation during advocacy impact day, which resulted in both rep. debbie lesko (r-az 8th district) and rep. andy biggs (r-az 5th district) agreeing to co-sponsor the bill. more co-sponsors are needed, so please reach out to your federal legislators urging them to support this legislation.
